Chile will set the standards in the bulk wine market

On the coming 25th and 26th of November, the 5th edition ofthe big international bulk wine event will be held in Amsterdam. It will be impacted by this year’s harvest and will also help to forecast what will happen in the next season. It is within this context that this year’s main protagonist is Chile.

Between January and March 2013, Chile’s bulk wine sales shot up from 75 million to almost 132.5 million liters compared to the same period last year. This represents an increase of more than a 76%, while the sales’ benefit increased 40% (from 69 to 97 million Euros).

Furthermore, Spain has an even more impressive record. Although there is still wine left at the Spanish wineries and cooperatives, this traditional bulk wine exporting country purchased more than 34 million liters for 15.5 million Euros, i.e. an average of 46 cents per liter.

Chile, which had already been one of the highlights of the 2012 World Bulk Wine Exhibition with eight participating wineries, sold a total of 294 million liters of bulk wine for 257 million Euros, i.e. an average of 0.87 Euros per liter during 2012.

The year-on-year sales of Chile in March 2013 place bulk wine above 351 million liters, a 47% increase compared to the year-on-year sales in March 2012, for an amount of 285 million Euros, an increase of 29% compared to the 220 million Euros at the same period in 2012. In order to increase competitiveness, the Chilean price average dropped by 12%: from 0.93 to 0.81 Euros per liter.

As for imports, the United States is still the first international buyer of Chilean bulk wine with 42 million liters during the first trimester, an increase in volume of 33%, for an amount of 32 million Euros, 35% more than during the same period in 2012. China is ranked after Spain, with 17 million liters, 12% more, for 15.5 million Euros. This is 17% less because the average price dropped almost by 13%, but it stayed just above one Euro.

The 5th edition of the World Bulk Wine Exhibition will be held on the coming 25th and 26th of November at the Amsterdam RAI.
